Dental Bridge Q & A
What is a dental bridge?
A dental bridge is a dental device that replaces lost or missing teeth. A bridge consists of a prosthetic tooth and crowns that anchor it to the teeth on either side of the gap.
In most cases, if you opt for a bridge to replace a missing tooth or teeth, a fixed bridge that’s permanently attached to your remaining natural teeth is recommended. There are removable options, but they’re typically more tricky to take care of and less durable since you take them out of your mouth.
Why would I need a dental bridge?
You may choose a dental bridge to replace a missing tooth or teeth for many reasons. First, a bridge can restore your smile, filling any gaps left by missing teeth.
Secondly, a dental bridge helps keep your remaining teeth in their correct positions. When you lose an adult tooth, your remaining natural teeth can shift into the available space creating gaps or even twisting, distorting your smile even more.
Dental bridges provide a natural-looking restorative treatment and are often more affordable than dental implants.
How are dental bridges applied?
In most cases, the dentists at Arya Dental apply dental bridges in two appointments. During your first appointment, your dentist examines your teeth, jaw, and gums to identify the best treatment to replace your missing teeth.
If a dental bridge is right for you, your dentist prepares the surrounding teeth for crowns by removing a thin layer of enamel to allow the crown to fit flush against your teeth. They also take pictures and molds of your surrounding teeth and the gap, which they send to a dental lab where your bridge is custom-made to fit your teeth precisely.
At your second appointment, your dentist fits the bridge onto your anchor teeth and checks the fit and bite before permanently bonding the bridge to your teeth. Once your bridge is secured to your teeth, you can go home and continue to care for your teeth with regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups.
